Press Release

AboveNet UK Launches Metro-Express, A Single Point-to-Point Wavelength Service Delivered Over AboveNet’s London Fibre Network.

London, May 11, 2004 — AboveNet Communications UK Ltd, the leading provider of integrated access services to leading edge enterprises, today expanded its lit optical services portfolio by delivering ‘Metro-Express’, a managed point-to-point single wavelength solution. This product, the second of its new managed services to be launched for the metropolitan area market since February 2004, has already received interest from a number of enterprises looking to re-evaluate or expand their networks across London. This product is currently available in 12 U.S. markets under the trade name AboveNet CWDM Wavelength Services.

“This new solution is a direct result of the increased number of enquiries AboveNet has been receiving for lit managed services across its London Dark Fibre Network,” said John Dowbiggin, AboveNet’s UK Managing Director. “AboveNet already delivers a number of services to many of the largest and most established corporations in the city. Metro-Express is an entry level service that will enable a growing number of businesses within the London district to benefit from AboveNet’s secure, high performance, business critical network.”

Delivered in a point-to-point configuration, Metro-Express is a single wavelength service enabling the delivery of data across a variety of transport speeds: Fast and Gigabit-Ethernet, STM-1, STM-4, STM-16 and Fibre Channel. Metro-Express provides a fully managed solution for organisations that do not have the in-house resources, equipment or desire to light and manage a metropolitan network for themselves. In today’s corporate environment, where a mixture of protocols has been adopted for many different applications, Metro-Express enables a one-stop solution. Delivered solely across AboveNet’s Dark Fibre Network, it provides a secure, completely private solution. With the ability to support a wide variety of the most commonly used protocols at ever increasing capacities; Metro-Express is also able to tailor redundancy and resilience levels to satisfy each customer’s individual requirements.

“In conjunction with our continued concentration on providing London’s most secure private networks, we are sharpening our portfolio of service-based optical products,” said Jody Taylor, AboveNet’s business development manager. “AboveNet is continuing to work with a number of suppliers in the market developing a range of services to compliment its existing portfolio. We are confident that AboveNet will be the name in the minds of companies looking for superior optical networking solutions.”
